GEORGE MICHAEL
‘TRUE FAITH’

AEGEAN RECORDS

After working on his “December Song” video, Mr Michael asked us to help him realise an idea he’d had for the video of his cover of New Order’s “True Faith”. His two requests for the video were; to heavily reference the 1987 original and to have smoke as a constant theme. To create the smoke we used a mixture of live action special effects, which were shot in water tanks with syringed ink, and CGI smoke, which was created using Maya particles. For the dancing we took inspiration from the Bauhaus Triadic ballet, as the original video had done, using motion capture to re-create the modern dance movement.

STYLEFRAMES

The Triadic ballet characters from the New Order video were brilliant. It was important to make our characters recognizable but with new features and with a different vibe. Studying the original Triadic ballet also gave us lots of ideas on how to generate some interesting new characters.

PROCESS

Creating animated, flowing particles is always hard. Maya Fluids was the basis for our research & development, which led us to use multiple layers of smoke, including some 2D turbulence effects and live-action footage. The results were like oil paints, flowing and merging on a 3D canvas.
