2012 OLYMPIC OPENING CEREMONY
SPACE INVADERS

59 PRODUCTIONS

59 Productions came to us to produce part of the 4D projection mapping for the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games. It was incredibly complicated and involved eight projectors, each in different positions round the stadium, giving the whole crowd an equally exciting view of the action. Unfortunately, we can’t show footage from the ceremony itself, so we’ve re-created our part of the show in 3D.

PROCESS

This ended up being the only piece of 4D projection in the opening ceremony. It was created for both the audience in the stadium and the TV viewers at home. Testing, to make sure the projections worked effectively, was really hard as there were so many other things for the organizers to do. We had to work on a six foot by six foot model of the stadium, with very little time. The really complicated part came when trying to join two key visual elements, that fly in between several apparently different perspectives.
