‘MAELSTRØM’
SHORT FILM TRAILER

A year in the making and it was worth the wait! Tom Geraedts joined M-I-E while finishing his masters in animation, at London College of Communication. This film was his final graduation piece but his tutors were so happy with his pre-production, prep work, they passed him on that alone. This gave us the chance to take our time and make the film properly. As you will notice, there is as much live action, as animation in the film, which sums up Tom’s confidence and ambition. We had some brilliant support from DP, Paul McKay, editor Ross Hallard from Trim
and the boys at Clapham Road Studios.

STYLEFRAMES

A considerable amount of time and effort went in to getting the styleframes exactly where we wanted them. Even though we were making this film for ourselves, we wanted to clearly convey our vision very early on, as the script was quite unconventional, it was more like a stream of consciousness, as is the film.

PROCESS

We spent two days filming on location and then two days in a motion control studio. Everything was shot on an Arri Alexa, except the tube scenes, which were filmed on a 5D, for ease of movement and set up. Almost everything else on location was shot on stedicam, which gives the film a lovely dream-like feel.
